Sandra Wong was too young to remember, but her parents say she displayed a deep love of music from a very early age. With Beethoven's 5th as her nighttime lullaby, Sandra began studying the violin at age seven with the intention of becoming a concert violinist. This remained her sole focus for fifteen years until she discovered fiddling…and her entire musical world was turned upside down! Suddenly music became about connecting with other people in a joyful, communal way rather than an isolated striving for perfection. It began with Irish, Old-time and Bluegrass festival jams and has grown into her current livelihood of teaching, performing, recording and collaborating with other musicians from a diverse range of world music genres. In 1999, Sandra fell in love with a wonderful Swedish folk instrument called the nyckelharpa, a 16 stringed, keyed bowed instrument. It is now an integral part of her work and musical expression. |

This past Saturday at Historic Wahconah Park in Pittsfield, MA marked the first hopefully many years of strong women in music coming together. The Berkshire Women's Muse Fest pulled together artists including Melissa Ferrick, Cheryl Wheeler, Nervous but Excited, SONiA from Dissappear Fear, Catie Curtis (filled in for Lindsay Mac), Gretchen Peters, Amy Petty, Pamela Means, Sarah Bettens, and the legend Suzanne Vega for a day long music festival that rivaled all folk festivals. It has been a long time since Brian has graced the stage at Club Passim, or any stage for that matter. Unlike Jay-Z and the other stars of his caliber, Brian is not "retired" as some might say... His life does have a new focus though. It was an intimate show. Brian shared his new addition to his, family, some old songs, some new ones, and a lot of light hearted laughter.

This past spring, at a Session Americana Tuesday night at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, I met an incredible Australian singer-songwriter named Mia Dyson.
I learned she would be playing a Wednesday night residency, opening for the Dennis Brennan band, and that beloved Session Americana/Dennis Brennan band drummer, Billy Beard would be playing with her. I thought, “Sure, I’ll be there. Billy, the Lizard Lounge, and residencies… all things I love.”

There is a place in Africa where the hot sands of the continent meet the sea. When travelers reach this shore from the mainland they would throw down their hearts in the face of a beauty they had never seen. This is the meaning of Bela Fleck's new independent film "Throw Down Your Heart". Not Your Average Folk was lucky enough to have a place in the sold out Coolidge Corner Theater last Thursday night to preview the film alongside Bela himself. |
