Description:
But where did Campanelli Stadium get its name?
In 1947, along with his brothers and brother-in-law Salvatore DeMarco, Mr. Campanelli founded the Campanelli Companies. The company focused their early efforts on building single-family homes that veterans could purchase at reduced rates through Veterans Administration and Federal Housing Authority loan programs. Through Campanelli Companies, Mr. Campanelli reached out and aided thousands of people in achieving the American Dream of home-ownership. Today, the Campanelli Companies, based in Braintree, are nationally known commercial real estate developers.
In 1958, Mr. Campanelli moved to Schaumburg, Illinois. In Schaumberg, Mr. Campanelli donated $3.85 million to pay off the mortgage and finance the building of an addition to the local YMCA. Though living 1000 miles away, Mr. Campanelli has always had a special place in his heart for Brockton. He donated $2 million to the City of Brockton to be used for the creation of a building or project that would substantially benefit the people of Brockton. In turn, the City of Brockton used that money to help finance the building of a baseball stadium for the Brockton Rox. A stadium which proudly wears the Campanelli name.
Alfred Campanelli, whose generosity to Brockton is immeasureable, passed away on April 9, 2003. His legacy lives on.

What is Gallery X?
Located in New Bedford's historic downtown, Gallery X is an artist owned and operated community art center. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is open to the public free of charge. Gallery X occupies the former Universalist Church at 169 William Street, just blocks from the Whaling Museum, National Whaling Historical Park and the city's blossoming entrepreneurial business district. Our 150-seat facility hosts local and national visual and performing artists, musicians and writers. Gallery X promotes a mission of cultural outreach through community partnerships, educational programs, and monthly exhibits.
The History of Gallery X
First conceived in the late 1980s and Incorporated on March 15, 1990, Gallery X was founded by former students of the Swain School of Design, local artists, and creative minded individuals as an arts cooperative. Gallery X rented a storefront on Spring Street in downtown New Bedford, between the former YWCA and the Zeiterion Theatre (both better known as the Y and the Z), thus inspiring the name Gallery X. At Spring Street, Gallery X was a showplace for artists, playwrights, thespians, musicians, and poets. Also hosted at Spring Street were art exchanges, children's art programs and workshops. In 1995 Gallery X moved to the former 1855 First Universalist Church building at 169 William Street, just half a block up from New Bedford's City Hall and the main branch of New Bedford's Free Public Library, and in 1998 the organization was able to purchase this historic building.
In 1999 Gallery X successfully restored the steeple of the former church building and volunteers helped to paint and restore the windows and building's west side and façade. In 2002, through a block grant from the New Bedford Office of Community Development, Gallery X received funding for a wheelchair lift. Volunteers constructed a handicap ramp and a handicapped accessible bathroom. In May, 2003, Gallery X's committed efforts in the restoration and upgrade of 169 William Street were recognized by WHALE at their annual meeting. Gallery X was awarded their honorary Sarah H. Delano award for diligent restoration of the former 1855 First Universalist Church of New Bedford. In 2004 Gallery X received a grant from the Island Foundation to hire their first staff person, an executive director.

Description:
As reporter Daniel Gewertz wrote in a 1995 cover story in North Shore Magazine, “The term “folk community” is used frequently among the musically inclined in New England . . . yet, there is one North Shore institution that so exemplifies the ideals of “folk community” that no other term can apply.”
He goes on to write: “There isn’t a single salaried employee on the staff. From booking artists, creating the schedule and publicizing the gigs to selling the cider and tweaking the sound board, all the labor is volunteer.”
“The volunteers of the Me&Thee experience folk music from the inside; their relationship to the music isn’t just intimate, it’s positively interactive. And when they talk of the Me&Thee being like family, the term isn’t just a simile.”
And so it’s been since February 20, 1970, when three friends, including current Board member and coordinator Ralph Anthony Silva, began a ‘night of folk music’ under the watchful eyes of a few chaperons supplied by our host church, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead.
The Board of Trustees at the Church was somewhat apprehensive about allowing these young people to take over the place on a Friday night. They prohibited the use of the word “coffeehouse” out of fear that the “wrong element” would show up. In those days, the wrong element was thought to be “beatniks.” It was long before hippies came into vogue.
But after three highly successful Friday evenings, the chaperons joined the staff and the Me&Thee was born. At first, the coffeehouse only operated in the church’s small Stetson Gallery, seating about 75 people. The door charge was kept at a constant 50 cents and an eclectic menu of everything from peanut butter sandwiches to octopus and crackers was served at each table.
A varied schedule of local singers, poets, mimes, storytellers and even old films like Zorro and Flash Gordon was presented. The new minister at the church sometimes provided draft counselling in his office and rap sessions took place in the back room until the early morning hours all under the dark cloud of the raging Vietnam War.
The impetus for the coffeehouse, though, began with a youthful Anthony Silva’s vision and naivete. After visiting the Newport Folk Festival and seeing performers up close at such institutions as the Sword in the Stone, the Unicorn, the Idler and Club 47 in Boston and Cambridge, he was one of the first in the country to bring this music into the suburbs.
It was around the time that many small city clubs were closing and intimate venues started to disappear that the Me&Thee began.
Anthony grew up in an ethnic Portuguese family where music was part of everyday life. His father was an accomplished mandolin maker and player who was featured at the Lowell Folk Festival. His uncles all played instruments including guitar and banjo and the strains of music always accompanied family and seasonal celebrations. All of these experiences came together at the Me&Thee .
At first, the coffeehouse paid artists 15 or 20 dollars a night and they sang into cheap Radio Shack microphones but through the years, the level of performance and professionalism rose dramatically.
The Me&Thee has now expanded beyond its original concept to include a mix of new talent, up and coming stars and accomplished performers who have been around for years.
The coffeehouse’s performance space now includes the church sanctuary, which can be used in conjunction with Stetson Hall to seat over 300 people. In recent years performers have included Tom Rush, Odetta, Jean Redpath, Liv Taylor, Pete Seeger, Tommy Makem, and Jesse Winchester along with Patty Larkin, Greg Brown, Dar Williams, Claudia Schmidt, Suzanne Vega, Tracy Chapman, and the dean of Me&Thee performers, Bill Staines, who has performed at least annually at the club since its first week!
So now, after almost 1,000 performances over almost 30 years, the coffeehouse has become an “institution” according to a recent Frommer’s Guide to Massachusetts.
The Boston Globe’s Scott Alarik has labelled the Me&Thee _ “folk music’s living room,” _ while writer Jeff McLaughlin has said,”the Me&Thee has become one of the most prestigious venues north of Boston for first-rank performers.”
But the Me&Thee has resisted the temptation of becoming a concert hall. It is not. It’s a living, breathing folk community that exudes friendliness from the front door back. In a recent interview, founder Silva said:
“You go into a rock club and it’s usually very cold and dark and noisy. It’s not a place where you can converse easily. People assume social roles, there are the go-getters and the wallflowers and the pick-up experts. You gotta be on guard because people expect action.
“The Me&Thee, conversely, is similar to somebody’s home. After all, that’s why it’s called a coffee house. The Me&Thee has a nice fireplace in the winter, some people sit around tables and talk quietly until the music begins. Our famous two-set nights have given way to a longer break in the middle because people want to visit with each other.
When you walk into the place and see young couples with small children, high schoolers, and people with grey hair all sitting next to one another, there’s a message there.
This is an accessible place, a place where you can feel at home, even if you’re thousands of miles away from your family. That’s the magic of the Me&Thee. That’s the spark that has kept this fire going for longer than I ever thought possible."

Description:
The New Moon Coffeehouse is an all volunteer, not for profit organization dedicated to providing quality music in a variety of styles. Our staff varies from a core of roughly 6 volunteers to more than a dozen. We do this because we enjoy sharing top quality acoustic music in a focused, smoke-free, alcohol-free setting. We believe that the experience of enjoying music in this way enhances our sense of community and culture in Northeastern MA... and... it's fun! The New Moon typically produces a minimum of one show per month from September to June.
Most performances are held in the (main) Murray Room of the Unitarian Universalist Church. This room is rectangular (42' x 50') with a high ceiling and plenty of wood. The resulting acoustics are pleasant and warm. We use a raised stage (~12") that consists of up to four sections (8' x 4') expandable to a maximum area of 16' x 8'. For larger acts or performances requiring the concert grand piano, we generally omit the raised stage. Folding chairs and some tables are provided for the audience. Maximum capacity of this room is about 150-190. For larger audiences, we set up in the church sanctuary which can seat 350 or more.

Open since January 1996, the Burren's history reaches back farther than that. It is actually the realization of a dream shared by two young Irish musicians, Tommy McCarthy and Louise Costello. Tommy and Louise began playing together nearly 10 years earlier. Today people can gather to enjoy a drink, the warmth of good friends and the excitement of live traditional Irish music, in the Burren, a dream come true.

Description:
The Middle East Restaurant and Nightclub consists of three live-music performance rooms, two family-style restaurants with full-service bars, and an elegant restaurant named ZuZu (the childhood nickname of one of the proprieters). Several of the rooms also serve as art galleries, offering a fresh showcase for local and international artists on a monthly basis. Both the staff and the customers are an international mix of musicians, students, townspeople and professionals. The Middle East first opened its doors in 1970 as a family-owned and operated Lebanese eatery; it was a time in which ethnic restaurants of all kinds were sprouting up all over Cambridge. Customers were at once attracted to the Middle East and won over by the authentic home cooking, the constant presence of and hospitality of the Sater family, and the restaurant's unique, eclectic ambiance. In 1975, the storefront next door was acquired and the two rooms connected to create what is now called the Upstairs. That same year, live music at the Middle East was born. After dinner came belly dancing, jazz, latin, and funk. Music at the Middle East took a serious turn when rock impresarios began renting the 200-capacity Upstairs and booking top talent to play there. This innovation forced the dining room into its present Massachusetts Avenue address. In 1988, a bakery at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Brookline Street became The Corner, a 70-person-capacity restaurant and bar with a small corner stage. In 1988, the old, abandoned bowling alley in the basement of the building was converted into the Downstairs, a 550-capacity venue for world-class musical performers. In April of 2001, the Middle East added an elegant restaurant named ZuZu to the complex. In October of 2002, Lilli Dennison added her own personal touch to the venue, including a sophisticated club decor, a hip hangout menu, and live music several nights a week. Cover charges for the Upstairs and Downstairs rooms usually vary between $9 and $12. Advance tickets for all shows are available at the Middle East Box Office and Ticketmaster locations. *Best Mid-Sized Music Venue, Boston's Weekly Dig Awards 2008
