The headline on Lori McKenna’s myspace page reads; singer, songwriter, wife, mother, setting the tone for duality on her major label debut album Unglamorous. Unglamorous glistens and gleams with slick modern country production, but thematically centers on ordinary, turbulent suburban life. “Five kids in too little time/ With eyes just like mine”, McKenna warbles in the title track, identifying and embracing domestic chaos, and revealing an attitude which serves to define this Stoughton housewife living the life of a country music diva.
McKenna uses her lyrics to say that “diva” is not a word she would use to describe herself, “How glamorous/crowded dinners at the kitchen table/How beautiful/one TV set no cable”. At her most optimistic, you get songs like “I’m Not Crazy” and “Witness to Your Life”, which reflect on the brighter side of marriage and reliable companionship. However, she shows the suburb’s darker side as well. In “Drinking Problem”, she strings the listener along with her alcoholic woes only to reveal mid-song that the drinking problem is not hers, but her partners, although the pain it causes makes it feel like her own. Peppered with mantras such as learning to live with life and doing what you have to do to survive, Unglamorous has a hard edge under its country-coated surface. It is this hard edge, as well as the cleverness and charm of her songwriting that makes you pay attention to the content beneath the bright instrumentation and hickory harmonies. Despite a few obvious lyrics and melodies, whereUnglamorous stands out is its core of confessions and ordinary familial moments. McKenna could easily join the ranks of songwriters such as Patty Griffin or Dolly Parton whose works become well known by being covered by more prominent artists. She has already high profile fans such as Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, who have recorded her songs on their albums and served as benefactors to Lori’s career as tour mate and record producer, respectively. Their support no doubt played a vital role in securing McKenna a place in the Warner Bros. stable of recording artists.
Lori McKenna lives a life filled with undeniable charm and gritty reality. Lucky for her, she seems to be enjoying the path it takes her down. Lucky for us, she’s good at sharing her story. Unglamorous is available now via Warner Bros.
